A humidor is more than a box โ it is a small climate system that keeps your cigars at their peak. A brand-new humidor, however, is bone dry and will pull moisture straight out of your cigars unless you season it first. Here is how to set one up properly.
Season the Cedar First
The Spanish cedar lining must absorb moisture before it can hold humidity steady. The cleanest method is to place a large seasoning Boveda pack (84% RH) inside a closed, empty humidor for two to three weeks. Avoid wiping the wood with water โ over-wetting warps the cedar and can spot your cigars.
Choose Your Humidification
Two-way humidity packs such as Boveda are the simplest, most reliable choice: they both add and absorb moisture to hold a precise level (69% is a popular target), with no distilled water or propylene glycol to manage. Traditional foam or crystal humidifiers work too but require more attention.
Calibrate Your Hygrometer
Never trust a hygrometer out of the box. Calibrate it with a 75% salt test or a 75% Boveda calibration kit: seal the hygrometer with the pack in a bag for 24 hours, then adjust it to read 75%. Only a calibrated hygrometer tells you the truth about your humidorโs conditions.
Maintain the Sweet Spot
Aim for 68โ72% relative humidity at a stable 18โ21ยฐC, away from direct sunlight and radiators. Check monthly and replace or recharge your humidity packs before they dry out. Stored this way, your cigars wonโt just keep โ they will age, mellow and improve for years.
