Buying Cigars in Prague: Czech Republic’s Tobacco Law Explained

The CSNM Editorial Team6 min read

Prague’s doutníkové kluby — cigar clubs — and its handful of serious tobacconists around the Old Town have quietly made the city one of Central Europe’s more interesting cigar scenes. Unlike its neighbours to the west and south, the Czech Republic has a law that speaks directly to online cigar sales, rather than leaving retailers to interpret a general tobacco framework. Here is what it actually says.

01

A Law Written Specifically for This Question

Since 28 August 2017, Act No. 65/2017 Sb. on the Protection of Health from the Harmful Effects of Addictive Substances has governed the sale of tobacco products, including cigars (doutníky), through remote means of communication — the Czech legal term covering online and mail-order sales. The law does not ban distance selling; instead it makes it conditional on the seller being able to reliably exclude sales to anyone under 18, through verified electronic age checks at the point of sale.

02

Why This Matters More Than It Sounds

Several of the Czech Republic’s neighbours took the opposite approach and prohibited cross-border tobacco distance sales outright. The Czech legislature instead built a specific, workable framework — arguably one of the clearer pieces of tobacco e-commerce law in the EU. That clarity is precisely why Prague, unlike Paris, Rome or Amsterdam, appears in this series as a city we can actually serve.
